In February 2019, to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, 144 of the Renaissance master's greatest drawings in the Royal Collection will go on display in 12 simultaneous exhibitions across the UK. “Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing” will give the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the works of this extraordinary artist and Sunderland is one of the 12 cities throughout Britain which will house these historic pieces.

Eon-Arts CIC is celebrating and helping to publicise this exhibition by creating several large Mona Lisa mixed media portraits, working with children from SNYP in Southwick and members of the FLAG  Fulwell Library Art Group

Gertrude Bell

Bell was born on 14 July 1868 in Washington New Hall, County Durham, England – now known as Dame Margaret Hall – to a family whose wealth ensured her education and enabled her travels. Her personality was characterised by energy, intellect, and a thirst for adventure which shaped her path in life.

Ian suggested that each portrait could depict a local female champion. The workshops encouraged artists to choose their own iconic Sunderland woman to be in the forefront of a well-known local landscape, building, community landmark or space.

We considered developing studies based on Gertrude Bell, Julie Elliot MP,Lauren Laverne and Denise Robertson MBE.

Fulwell artist Sue Martin produced a stunning portrait of Kate Adie OBE, combining her Sunderland roots in the pose of the Mona Lisa.

The Mackem Mona Lisa's can be seen at Mackie's Corner Fawcett Street Sunderland. Open Friday 18th and Saturday 19th January from 10am-5pm.
